We, The Inhabitants of Social Asylum Houses
Isolation as a result of disability, long-term illness, old age, forlorn childhood. The people behind walls, windows, or bars used to be hidden from us. They have been excluded from our everyday lives. But it is necessary to remember that they are living among us and have the right to share public space. Documentary films portraying the lives of those with mental illness will be screened at the French Institute on Tuesday, April 15.
The times of individual screenings are as follows:
5:00 pm
Able
Japan/USA / 2001
7:00 pm
Evolution
Poland / 2001
followed by short Slovak film That’s us

After the screenings, there will be a panel discussion about people with mental disabilities and their right to a decent life.

      Power-illness of the Media
A panel discussion on the tabloidization of media, the collusion of media and politics, and their influence on public opinion will take place April 10 at the French Institute. It will be preceded by the screening of the documentary Citizen Krone (Belgium, 2002). The film explores the Austrian daily Kronen Zeitung, the most widely read paper per capita in the world. The friendly surface of the tabloid’s well-crafted populism and hometown appeal is pulled back to reveal its right-wing agenda of anti-immigration and law-and-order policies. Editor-in-Chief Hans Dichand makes no secret of the Krone’s influence on Austrian politics, particularly in the rise of Jorg Haider and his Freedom Party. Told with a light touch that makes the film all the more pleasurable to watch, this is a powerful exposé of how the interconneciton between politics and mass media works to manipulate democratic society.

Institute of Documentary Film: Documentary Film and International Distribution
Most filmmakers from Eastern Europe have gone through similar experiences. Their films may have been successful at regional festivals, but they get little response from wider distribution networks. The problem is not that the position of documentaries from Eastern Europe on Western markets is weak, but inexperience with the market and distribution strategies that are based on cooperation with distributors. This seminar will be attended by experienced and acclaimed distributors Debra Zimmermann of Women Make Movies and Jane Balfour of the Jane Balfour Agency. They will present the development of distribution techniques for documentaries and outline the possibilities for films from Eastern Europe on the world market.

The seminar will take place April 10 at 3:00 p.m. at the Ponrepo cinema.

People in Need Foundation: Documentary Film and Education
Films selected for the One World Festival have been screened at more than 230 high schools. Our experience demonstrates the potential of documentaries as an educational tool. This has also been confirmed by the teachers who have participated in the project. According to them, the broader usage of documentaries in the education process is restricted by the low availability of films. Representatives of the Czech Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture, media, documentary filmmakers, and high-school teachers will participate.

The seminar will take place April 11, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at the Ponrepo cinema.

Arms Trafficking: Why and How It Should be Controlled?
This panel discussion will be attended by representatives of NGOs focusing on the control of the arms trade: Safeworld (UK) and Security Research and Information Center (Kenya), as well as by representatives of several important Czech institutions, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and members of Parliament.

The discussion will take place April 15 at 3:00 p.m. at the Ponrepo cinema. The panel will be preceded by the screening of the films Child Soldiers (Australia, 2002) and Defendory International (UK).

Greenpeace : Bhopal – a Tragedy That Does Not End
The world’s worst industrial accident took place on the night of December 3, 1984 in the Indian town of Bhopal. More than 40 highly dangerous gases were released from a chemical plant owned by the American company Union Carbide. Several thousand people died during the night. Hundreds of thousands were affected and continue to suffer from the consequences of this tragedy. Greenpeace has begun a campaign to clean Bhopal and gain compensation for the victims.

A discussion on toxic pollution and the responsibility of large corporations will take place April 14 at 3:00 at the Ponrepo cinema. It will be preceded by the short documentary No More Bhopals.
