We often tend to restrict the term "world" to that small place around us where we live and work. Therefore, we tend to think that this place is more or less good. Thanks to those who established the People in Need Foundation, we know that this is not true. The aim of the collaboration between Czech Television and the People in Need Foundation was, is, and always will be to provide an enduring flow of information about the "outside" world, the world beyond our doors, the world where needy people live. The other purpose of our partnership is to disseminate information about ways in which each of us can help to make this world a better place. For public television it is important to be able to support and participate in campaigns such as the recent SOS Floods, in which we managed to collect more than 8.2 million euro to offer assistance to individuals, families, and institutions that have been hit by devastating floods. In 1999 the activities of the People in Need Foundation expanded with the One World film festival, and we are honored to be media partner for this significant event, as it fully corresponds with the role of a public broadcaster. Even though we hope each year that the world will become a better place, human rights are still an urgent issue. Despite the fact that our society has evolved to a sophisticated level, and despite the fact that we use advanced technologies to communicate, we have not learned to communicate with each other, particularly regarding communication on the rights of human beings to a decent existence. The One World festival provides us with an exceptional opportunity to comprehend the unpleasant fact that, despite our highly civilized third millennium, the world is still not a safe and nice place to live.
