Dear friends, It is with great interest, respect, and sympathy that I have been following for years the activities of the People in Need Foundation. Therefore, I am pleased to see that the idea to organize an international human rights film festival in the Czech Republic has received such a response. This will be already the fifth year of the One World festival, the first of its kind in Central Europe. One World presents a whole spectrum of documentary films, acquainting the viewer with the conditions in various less fortunate parts of the world, where people still encounter violations of the most basic human rights. However, One World is not just a testimonial of human suffering. Its message of the strength of human solidarity and the will of individuals to resist violence and injustice reinforces man’s belief in his rights and dignity. In these times, when violence on television screens is gaining general acceptance, the One World festival makes an appeal to our conscience. Because if we, in our modern, interconnected world, lose interest in the fate of our fellowman, however far away he or she may be, we will lose much of our human nature, and we will find it increasingly difficult to face the challenges of the future.
