Dear friends, I would like to thank all of you for drawing attention by your interest in the One World film festival to an important issue: that all of us are indeed inhabitants of one planet. While this statement might sound trivial, like something so obvious it is not worth mentioning, in this present day and age we often end up paying dearly for considering certain things too obvious. We ought to strive to learn more about what really occurs in our one common world. Unfortunately, we somehow got used to our little (Central) European playground – we are quite happy in it. However, if we prefer to close our eyes to realities that spoil our tranquil view, our approach is far from auspicious. In fact, it is downright catastrophic for the future of this world. The documentary films presented at the One World film festival fortunately help to open our eyes – at least for eight days of the year. I am very proud that the idea to organize this festival originated in Prague. I was greatly pleased to learn that it has inspired the emergence of other similar festivals elsewhere in the world – in Slovakia, Poland, Croatia, Serbia – and that One World documentaries have found their way to Belarus, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Cuba. The point that all of us live in one world, Czechs just as Tibetans, Chechens, or Afghans, simply cannot be just some slogan or "politically correct" statement. It is a fact, which has certain consequences for all of us. I am glad to have the opportunity to realize this together with all of you. Pavel Bém Mayor of Prague |
