— The One World International Human Rights Film Festival was created by the non-profit People in Need Foundation with the aim of using the powerful medium of film and video to foster mutual understanding between cultures, heighten public awareness about human rights, and promote global responsibility.

— In just five years, One World has quickly emerged as one of the largest and most important human rights film festivals in Europe and is now firmly established as one of Prague's premier cultural and media events.

— The One World film festival consists of an international competition of documentary films and videos, retrospectives and tributes, showcases, workshops, debates, concerts, photo exhibitions, and other events. Approximately 150 films / videos from countries spanning the globe are presented each year. Screenings are followed by discussions with festival guests.

— Competition films are eligible for the Best Film Award, Best Director Award, the Rudolf Vrba Award, the Mayor of Prague Award, the Audience Award, and a Special Award for the most outstanding contribution to human rights awareness that is presented by Václav Havel. Prominent documentary film figures participate in the main festival jury. The Rudolf Vrba Award's international jury include human rights activists and victims of repression and injustice from around the globe.

— One World has established a wide-ranging program of cooperation with Czech high schools and universities to help educate students about human rights issues. Over 230 schools are currently involved in the program.

— In addition to directly organizing One World in Prague and 15 other main cities of the Czech Republic, People in Need Foundation also supports non-governmental and cultural organizations in other countries in launching their own human rights film screenings. By working with these local partners, PINF has so far held smaller versions of One World in Slovakia (June 2000, November 2001, October 2002), Kosovo (October 2000, December 2001, December 2002), Yugoslavia (May/June 2001), Belarus (June-September 2001), Poland (November 2001, December 2002), Croatia (December 2002). Currently, talks are held with non-governmental organizations from Bosnia, Ukraine, Macedonia and Baltic states that have shown initial interest in staging One World type of events in their countries.

  European Coordination of Film Festivals

The European Coordination of Film Festivals (ECFF) is a network of 200 audio-visual festivals with strong roots in the regions of Europe. Member festivals are dynamic, cultural events which have made a commitment to promote the diversity of the European moving image.

Our mission is to develop all forms of services and joint-projects that will strengthen our Members’ promotion and circulation of the diversity of the European moving image:

  • to develop exchanges, cooperation and the transfer of good practice between festivals
  • to encourage transnational partnerships between members
  • to seek global solutions to common problems
  • to increase the collective impact of festivals on the promotion and circulation of the European moving image
  • to promote the cultural dimension and socio-economic roles of festivals
  • to inform European and International institutions about activities and issues concerning festivals

Organisation
The European Coordination of Film Festivals was created in 1995 and incorporated as a European Economic Interest Grouping (EEIG) in 1997. The Coordination is a membership organisation led by the elected Board of Directors and its Chairman assisted by the Executive Committee. Fifteen National Antennas represent Members from each country of the European Union. All members are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting normally held every June in Brussels. The Coordination positively encourages cooperation between Members through working groups called "Workshops". The Permanent Office in Brussels coordinates the implementation of projects and activities, manages administrative and financial resources and provides advice and technical support on request.

ECFF is financed by the annual membership fee, contributions by members for specific projects, sponsorship, the Corporate Membership Scheme and public grants including from MEDIA, the European Union’s support programme for the audio-visual industry.

The headquarters of the European Coordination of Film Festivals is located in Brussels. All enquiries should be addressed to:
