NEW WORLD ORDER: SOMEWHERE IN AFRICA, Phillipe Diaz, France

An indictment of Western responsibility for the ghastly conflict in Sierra Leone, where the commercial and financial interests of multinational corporations have doomed hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

We were all aware that the meaning of the festival is to alert broad public audiences about the burning problems the world is facing today, no matter if they are in Asia, Africa, Europe or America. We selected this film because its story struck our minds tremendously and while watching this documentary we could not believe that in the 21st century some people still can be so cruel and indifferent to do such horrible things. Moreover, the film highlights various kinds of issues - hunger and poverty in Africa, ecological, educational and health care problems. It also shows bad decisions made by the United Nations and the influence of powerful and rich countries on the development of the Third World countries. These are the reasons why we unanimously decided for this documentary to win the award. (Jean Michel Mokielle, a jury member)

Each military conflict initiated for whatever reasons in any part of the world, as well as any natural catastrophe, influences our lives whether we like it or not. That is why solidarity with those who suffer and commitment to offer them every kind of possible help should become part of the system of values of each individual. (Jan Kasl, Mayor of the City of Prague)
