THE GLEANERS AND I
, Agnes Varda, France

Here and there in France, Agnés Varda has come across "gleaners" -- foragers, rummagers and scavengers. Through necessity, by chance or out of choice, these people collect items that have been discarded by others, and their wares show how surprising their world is.

We really had a wonderful selection of films to choose from dealing with people's rights, people's dignity and the fight against all forms of oppression. It was hard to select only one film to win this category. In the end we unanimously decided on The Gleaners and I because it aims straight at our hearts and offers a tender look at women and men alike. It is a very simple movie, but its simplicity is poetry. (Rithy Panh, a jury member)

It is a real pleasure for me that I was invited to a festival that concentrates on human rights issues. My film is also about one very basic right - the right to pick things that others threw away or left behind, things they do not need any more. It is a serious film with humor in it, and I think that certain kinds of humor or a good mood and love for others will enable us to share ourselves with other people. (Agnes Varda)
