The Best Film Award
Here and there in France, Agnés Varda has come across "gleaners" -- foragers, rummagers and scavengers. Through necessity, by chance or out of choice, these people collect items that have been discarded by others, and their wares show how surprising their world is.
We really had a wonderful selection of films to choose from dealing with people's rights, people's dignity and the fight against all forms of oppression. It was hard to select only one film to win this category. In the end we unanimously decided on The Gleaners and I because it aims straight at our hearts and offers a tender look at women and men alike. It is a very simple movie, but its simplicity is poetry. (Rithy Panh, a jury member) |
