ANGELOS' FILM, Péter Forgács, Hungary Like other Greeks, Angelos witnessed the dreaded sight of Nazi Germany's war machine entering Athens. But unlike anyone else, he realized it was paramount to record these events as they unfolded, and covertly filmed everything - offering extraordinary documentation of the atrocities committed by the Nazis against his people.
It was an uneasy and hard work for members of our jury to select the winner of this category, as all films we saw were of high professional quality. In the end we had to select the winning documentary from among three works: Saia (Shadows), Angelos' Film and Riding the Tiger. The reason why we chose Peter Forgacs's Angelos' Film is that we wanted to acknowledge an extraordinary creative use of sound, voice and music in his documentary. Those three components seemed to be in an excellent balance with the pictorial part of the film. We also wanted to acknowledge his delicate work with historical materials.
