One World in Schools Abroad

For several years now, the One World in Schools programme has been expanding abroad. Together with foreign non-profit organisations from Estonia, Poland and Slovakia, it established the successfully completed Watch and Change project, which engaged in global development education while using documentary films.

In the past two years, the ranks of our foreign partners were expanded to include non-profit organisations from Lebanon, Kosovo, Bosnia and Georgia, who are involved in educating young people and the general public about human rights.

The One World in Schools programme’s cooperation with partner organisations is primarily based on imparting expertise in the use of documentary films for lessons on development topics and human rights. Each foreign partner organisation creates its own teaching materials in which it takes account of specific local issues.

The network of One World Film Clubs for students is also expanding abroad through long-term cooperation with partner organisations in Slovakia, Romania, Poland and Estonia. The fourth annual One World International School of Documentary Film was held in the summer of 2010. On the one hand, this event offers space for club organisers to exchange experiences, but above all it is also a place for their own film production.

Stories of Injustice is another project that also expanded beyond the borders of the Czech Republic last year. It is focused on teaching modern Czechoslovak history. A set of materials looking at the era of communist injustice was distributed via partners in Slovakia, Poland, Sweden, and Bulgaria.

In 2009, the One World in Schools programme received a World Aware Education Award from the Council of Europe for its innovative approach to providing education on global development themes as well as for successfully sharing know-how with foreign partners.
