Country of Dreams
Země snů
Martin Ryšavý / Czech Republic / 2009 / 57 min.
Previously, they had lived in the Vietnamese countryside. They were poor, but relatively content. Then they put their trust in one of many foreign agencies, which promised them fabulous earnings in a promised land called the Czech Republic. Their family and even their distant relatives pawned everything they owned, and they got an astronomical bank loan of 6-10,000 dollars to pay for their flights and work visas. They believed that they would make enough in this "paradise" to pay off their debts and that they would considerably improve their family finances. Instead, they ended up being disillusioned by broken promises from the agency, unsuitable accommodation and low wages. To make matters worse, a burgeoning economic crisis meant that a lot of them also lost their badly paid jobs. The interest on their bank loans is growing at a terrifying rate. Their families are waiting for money and returning to their country in this situation seems like a nightmare ? Director Martin Ryšavý enjoyed the trust of the Vietnamese community, which was crucial to working on this subject in Country of Dreams.
