Battle of Rabbit Town
Battle of Rabbit Town
Christian Pagh, Thomas Bottcher / Denmark / 2009 / 55 min.
Covis and Carlos live in a poor district known as Rabbit Town in the Brazilian city of Recife, and they are actively involved in municipal politics. While Carlos moderates political discussions and other talks on local radio, Covis has been elected as a community leader and works in a social centre in the area. During Brazil's municipal elections, each of them supports a different candidate - Carlos backs a local businessman and owner of a football club, while Covis prefers the incumbent communist mayor. One has connections, while the other is enthused by leftwing ideals. The Danish documentary-maker Christian Pagh closely follows the practices of local political campaign leaders. Brazilian-style rightwing liberalism, represented by bribery and the buying of votes for football shirts, money or other small favours, is contrasted with the blind and resolute idealism of a communist indulging in empty promises and grand gestures. The tension increases as the day of the election approaches. It's a contest only one man can win.
