Ticket to Paradise
Fra Thy til Thailand
Janus Metz / Denmark / 2008 / 59 min.
Kae and Kjeld get married, but instead of a honeymoon, the bride returns to her native Thailand after the ceremony. Meanwhile, her Danish husband remains at home, as they wait for Kae to be granted a permanent residence permit. She has always dreamed on going to the West for a better life. Just like many other Thai women, Denmark represents her ideal dream of paradise. The way for her to get there is a marriage of convenience. Director Janus Metz collaborated on the script for this film with the social anthropologist Sine Plambech, who has conducted research on the migration of Thai women. There is certainly no shortage of demand for them - older single Danish men are looking for Thai women who are willing to marry them, because their different cultural traditions offer them an advantage. Being inured to housework, Asian women usually don't fight for their emancipation. At the same time, Denmark is a country that has done a better job than others when it comes to tackling gender inequality. Among other things, this film shows how gender differences in society influence migration.
